**** Follow Pre-departure Guidelines.****

1) Schedule plenty of time in the morning to take your Yorkie to their designated bathroom area, go for a 20-minute walk, and offer breakfast without rushing.

2) Place your Yorkie in their area 10 to 15 minutes before you actually leave.

3) Do not shower your Yorkie with hugs and kisses when you say goodbye. You can offer this sort of interaction beforehand.

4) When you are ready to depart, do this in a matter-of-fact way.

5) If your Yorkie shows signs of separation anxiety as you are closing the front door, do not re-enter to soothe him. Trust that the methods you have set up will do their job once you are gone.

*****Follow Arrival Guidelines.****

When you finally come home after a long day at work, it is natural to want to greet your dog and give big hugs and kisses. And, if your Yorkie has trouble staying home alone, you may really want to pour on the attention.

However, when a dog suffers from separation anxiety, making a big deal out of arriving back home can be counterproductive. An excited high-pitched voice and over-animated hugs can send a signal that it’s a miracle you made it home and that your dog was correct to worry so much.

Keeping this in mind, it is best to casually enter the house without going directly to your Yorkie. First, flip through the mail or get a drink of water. After one to three minutes, calmly approach, say hello in matter-of-fact manner, and allow your little guy or gal to come out of their playpen or other designated area.

*****To Summarize*****

It's always difficult to leave the house if you know that your Yorkie is going to struggle with being home alone. And, while your little guy or gal may never be excited to see you go, you can do quite a bit to make this time less stressful.

This includes having no-rush mornings with a 20-minute exercise session. Importantly, set up a 'den' with a comfortable bed, line this with pee pads, and fill this with helpful aids like toys that speak, treat dispensers, and a companion toy. It can also help to leave on pleasant background sounds and ensure there is proper lighting as well as comfortable temperatures with no drafts or close proximity to heating sources.

Desensitize your Yorkie to cues that you are leaving, depart in a calm manner and return as if it is not a big event. If possible, offer your Yorkie a break during the day and if needed, offer a calming supplement or speak to your vet about a low dose of prescribed medication to take the edge off of anxiety. #yorkielove #yorkielife #burenwagyorkies
